Diabetes is becoming a global epidemic today and according to the World Health Organization, more than 220 million people were suffering from Diabetes as of November 2009. Additionally, a majority of these people had Type 2 Diabetes. India has amongst the largest number of diabetics with more than 42 million diagnosed with this condition. Not to mention that the numbers are only swelling given the increasingly urban lifestyle.
What is Diabetes?
Diabetes is a condition in which the body is unable to regulate the amount of sugar in blood. Normally, various mechanisms work together in the body to maintain a certain sugar level in the blood. Whatever food we eat, it gets converted into glucose and this in turn gets converted to energy inside the body cells. Several hormones including insulin help the glucose to move from blood into cells. When this mechanism fails to function properly (due to whatsoever reason), glucose gets accumulated in the blood and cannot be moved inside the cells for conversion to energy. High levels of glucose in blood for prolonged periods can cause damage to various organs besides the lack of energy that is felt by the patient.
What is Type 2 Diabetes?
There are 2 types of Diabetes. Type 2 Diabetes (also called Non-insulin dependent Diabetes Mellitus or NIDDM) is a condition in which the body produces insulin but it cannot be utilised properly.
Type 1 Diabetes (Insulin dependent Diabetes Mellitus or IDDM or juvenile onset diabetes) on the other hand is the condition in which the body cannot produce enough insulin.
