Nonhealing Fracture (Nonunions)

A nonhealing fracture, also known as nonunions, occurs when some broken bones do not heal even when they get the best surgical or non-surgical treatment. This happens when the fracture moves too much or there is poor supply of blood. People who smoke are at a high risk of nonhealing fracture.

Causes:

  • Degree of displacement
  • Infection
  • Lack of blood flow to the bone
  • Separation of fractured ends of the bone

Symptoms:

  • Tenderness
  • Swelling
  • Pain
