A nonhealing fracture, also known as nonunions, occurs when some broken bones do not heal even when they get the best surgical or non-surgical treatment. This happens when the fracture moves too much or there is poor supply of blood. People who smoke are at a high risk of nonhealing fracture.
Causes:
- Degree of displacement
- Infection
- Lack of blood flow to the bone
- Separation of fractured ends of the bone
Symptoms:
- Tenderness
- Swelling
- Pain
