Effective Home Remedies for Asthma

Asthma is caused by a variety of factors. It may be due to an allergy caused by weather conditions or allergy to foods, drugs, perfumes and other irritants. Home remedies for asthma are known for their effectiveness, so most people choose home remedies over any other conventional medicine for managing this condition.
Allergies to dust are very common. Certain foods also cause allergic reactions.  Prime suspects are wheat, eggs, milk, chocolates, beans, fish and seafood. Then there is the psychological aspect. Studies have shown that about 25% of young asthmatics have a deep-seated emotional insecurity and an intensive need for parental love and protection. Heredity also plays a role.

If you want to avoid conventional medicines, try these home remedies for asthma!

Coffee

Drinking coffee and any other caffeinated drink immediately eases the airways and helps you breathe for up to 4 hours. Caffeine is the bronchodilator which opens the congested airways. Black tea also has caffeine. Consume your black tea or coffee warm for fast relief.

Essential oils

One of the best home remedies for asthma is using essential oils for breathing. Essential oils such as eucalyptus, lavender, tea tree, basil and kalonji (black seed) help in breaking down the mucus, soothing the airways and strengthening the immune system. Just add a few drops of any of these oils in hot water and inhale the steam for 5-10 minutes. You can also pour the oil on a damp cloth and inhale vapours.

Turmeric

This is one of the oldest home remedies for asthma. It contains curcumin which helps in relieving asthma. Its anti-inflammatory properties alleviate the inflammation of the airways. Just mix a little turmeric powder in water and consume it thrice a day for at least 10 days.

Ginger

The anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties in ginger lessen allergic responses by lowering IgE levels. Studies have shown that ginger soothes the airways, so it is one of the effective home remedies for asthma. You can either drink ginger tea or simply chew a small piece throughout the day.

Honey

One of the effective home remedies for asthma is honey. When combined with cinnamon, honey helps in removing phlegm from the throat and boost your immune system as well. Honey has inflammatory properties that reduce swelling in the airways and help asthmatics breathe easily. So, adding honey to your diet is great!

Omega-3 fatty acids

Consumption of omega-3 fatty acids can help prevent allergies and asthma symptoms. Good source of omega-3 fats is fish oil.

Onions & garlic

Onion is a great home remedy for asthma because of its anti-inflammatory properties that help clear the airways. Eat raw onion daily to reap the benefits of this vegetable. Similarly, garlic clears congestion in the lungs and provides quick relief from asthma symptoms. Like onion, garlic also reduces the inflammation of the air passages.
