What is Ulcer?

Ulcers are painful open sores or wounds, which generally appear on inside the mouth, inside the lining of the stomach or the upper part of the small intestine. Also known as peptic or gastric ulcers, can commonly be the result of an excess consumption of spicy foods, alcohol, drugs, cigarette smoke, or even stress. However, the main cause of ulcers is usually a bacterial infection, which is mainly the result of smoking or the intake of harsh and strong medications. This bacteria, can live as well as grow inside the stomach or intestine, and cause ulcers to form within these organs. Ulcers can also be a result of an excess secretion of stomach acid, which eats away at the lining tissues of the stomach, causing ulcers to form.
Ulcers are generally characterised by a burning sensation in the stomach and mild to severe pain in the abdominal area. However, all ulcers may not be painful; constant indigestion, heartburn and feelings of nausea can also be symptoms of this health disorder.
Ulcers are a serious as well as painful health issue, however, this can be easily cured with the right treatment. Nevertheless, if left untreated ulcers may lead to severe health problems.
