what is sinusitis

What is Sinusitis?

Sinuses are hollow air spaces within the bones around the area of the nose. When these sinuses get blocked due to the formation of bacteria or mucus, they get inflamed and cause infection and pain. This pain refers to sinusitis. It usually starts with inflammation triggered by cold, allergy attack or irritant. One may also suffer from fatigue coupled with a trouble in the sense of taste or smell, headache, bad breath and sore throat.
Sinusitis are of four types. These include:

  1.  Acute – This comes with symptoms like pain on various parts of your face, running or congested nose. It starts on its own and does not get cured before 10-15 days.
  2.  Subacute – This particular inflammation usually lasts from 3-8 weeks.
  3. Chronic – In this case, the problem might persist from 8-10 weeks, and sometimes even more.
  4. Recurrent – People suffering with this, experience the attack several times in a year.

Sinusitis is not contagious but it might trigger the symptoms further while you are travelling. People suffering from this issue are often advised to sip on hot tea or fluids as it breaks up the congestion in your nose and relieves you of the pain.
