Your skin can react to infections anywhere in your body. It can also react to the environmental toxins outside the body. It is vulnerable to many diseases. Internal factors such as an infection or external factors such as pollution, allergies etc, could cause skin disorders, which not only feel uncomfortable, but if left untreated, could cause bleeding and permanent scars.
Dermatitis is a painful condition wherein the skin breaks out into a red rash, develops blisters and appears scaly. You may also experience a burning or itchy feeling.
- Contact dermatitis: This type of dermatitis is caused when the skin reacts to certain chemicals it comes in contact with. These may include poisonous plants such as ivy or oak or certain metals such as nickel which is found in many everyday products. Irritant eczema results from an allergic reaction to impurities such as chemicals in food and detergents or environmental factors such as the weather. It is also very common among people who have prolonged contact with water or those who need to wash their hands several times a day such as restaurant workers, cleaners, hairdressers etc. If the hands are not dried properly each time it could cause soreness and irritation.
- Acne: is a very common skin disorder caused by inflammation of the skin’s oil glands and hair follicles with bacteria and other irritants. Generally, the toxins present in our bodies are eliminated by the kidneys and the liver. But if the toxins are excessive, the skin too is pressurized to remove them, failing which, leads to inflammation. Fried, processed and fatty foods are a major cause of acne, in addition to poor hygiene.
- Psoriasis: usually results in red, thick, dry and scaly patches on the skin which are due to inflammation and excessive skin production. The cause of psoriasis is believed to be genetic but factors such a poor diet and liver function, aggravate it.
- Fungal rashes: Fungal rashes, cysts, and abscess are also common skin disorders which can be prevented to a large extent with a proper diet, supplementation and natural treatments such as detoxification. A high-fiber, low in fat and protein and high in complex carbohydrates diet, is particularly beneficial for skin health. Have foods rich in vitamins A and C, beta-carotene and chlorophyll such as beetroot, potatoes, yam, egg yolk, dark green vegetables and peppers. Have foods in their natural state as far as possible and avoid junk food completely. Also drink lots of water and healthy juices such as carrot and green vegetable juice. Chromium, present in brewer’s yeast, complex carbohydrates and fresh fruits, is an important nutrient for skin health – it balances blood sugar and reduces stress, both of which could cause skin problems. Zinc, found in garlic, onions, eggs and seafood is effective in preventing thickening of the skin due to acne, eczemas and psoriasis.
- Vitamins help: Vitamin A, E, B6 and Lecithin are also essential for treating skin problems and promoting good skin health. Many herbs including Echinacea, milk thistle, celery seed, aloe vera and lavender, among others are found to be beneficial in preventing and treating various skin disorders. Above all avoid fried and fatty foods, chocolates, soft drink, alcohol as these increase inflammation, water retention and swelling in the body and make your skin look puffy and uneven.
